How to Use Learning Log
A step-by-step guide for homeschooling families.
Getting Started
Learning Log is built for homeschooling families. A parent creates the family account, then adds students who log their own learning.
Register as a parent
A parent creates the family account with an email address. You'll be the family administrator. (Registration is currently invite-only during our closed beta.)

Set up your family
Your family is created automatically during registration. You can update the family name in Settings at any time.
Explore the parent dashboard
Once logged in, your dashboard shows an overview of all your students' activity — recent entries, streaks, and curriculum balance at a glance.
Adding Students
Students belong to your family and have their own login credentials. Each student gets a private space to write their learning log entries.
Navigate to Family
Click "Family" in the navigation bar to see your current students and add new ones.
Create a student account
Click "Add Child" and fill in their display name, password, and optional avatar color. Students log in with your family name and their display name — no email required.

Share their credentials
Give your student their login details: the family name (shown on the Family page), their display name, and the password you set. They'll use the student login tab.
Setting Up Subjects
Subjects organize learning entries by topic. Each family starts with sensible defaults, and you can customize from there.
Review default subjects
Your family starts with seven subjects: Math, Science, Literature, Writing, History, PE, and Life Skills. Each has a color for visual organization.
Add custom subjects
In Settings, you can add subjects specific to your curriculum — Art, Music, Physical Education, Foreign Languages, or anything else your family studies.

Choose distinct colors
Pick a unique color for each subject. Colors appear on entry cards and charts, making it easy to spot curriculum balance at a glance.
Writing Log Entries
Entries are the heart of Learning Log. Students write about what they learned, building a rich record over time.
Start a new entry
From the student dashboard, click "New Entry." Choose a subject, give it a title, and start writing.
Write with Markdown
The editor supports Markdown — use headings, bold, lists, and links to structure your writing. A live preview shows how it will look.

Log your time
Use the time slider to record how long you spent on the activity. This feeds into the parent dashboard's time analytics.
Reflect with prompts
Optional reflection prompts help younger learners think deeper about what they studied. Dismiss or refresh to get a different one — no pressure.

The parent dashboard — see all your students at a glance
Activity overview
See recent entries across all students, with subject badges and time spent. Click any entry to read the full content.

Visual charts show how time is distributed across subjects for each child. Quickly spot if a subject needs more attention.

Drill into a student
Click a student's name to see their individual analytics — the Overview tab shows curriculum balance and goals, with separate tabs for recent logs, all logs, and goal management.
Engagement
Learning Log includes features to keep students motivated and connected with their parents.
Comments
Parents can leave encouraging comments on any entry. Students see these on their dashboard, creating a feedback loop that motivates writing.

Streaks
Students build streaks by logging entries consistently. The streak counter appears on the dashboard as a fun motivator — no pressure, just encouragement.

Tips for Success
Here are some tips from homeschooling families who use Learning Log effectively:
- Start small. Even a few sentences per entry builds the habit. Quality and length grow naturally over time.
- Log daily, review weekly. Students write entries during or after lessons. Parents check in once a week for a balanced view.
- Use comments for connection. A quick "Great job exploring that!" goes a long way in keeping students engaged.
- Let students own it. The log is their space. Encourage authenticity over perfection — messy notes about real learning beat polished reports.
- Review curriculum balance monthly. The charts make it easy to see if any subjects are being neglected or overemphasized.
